Dom Cooney (8)

One of 8-ball pool’s rising stars, Dom Cooney has already disrupted the sport’s hierarchy during the inaugural Ultimate Pool Professional Series where he won Event 8.

In front of the live television cameras, Cooney secured the biggest accolade of his career to date, memorably eliminating two world champions back-to-back during the same session to lift the trophy.

Having defeated Rob Chilton 6-5 and Jimmy Croxton 6-1 in the previous rounds, Cooney denied Chris Melling 6-3 in the semi-finals and then reigning world blackball champion Scott Gillespie 10-7 in the final. Outside of the provisional top 16 rankings before the tournament, this triumph catapulted Cooney into the top eight on the end-of-year list.

That victory iced a very pleasing year for the Cambridgeshire cueist; a few months before he won the third Jason Owen Open event of the year on the World Rules Pool Tour and prior to that made the semi-finals of Pro Series Event 2.

Cooney started playing when he was aged just 4 at his parents’ pub where he used to stand on drinks crates to reach the table and pot the remaining balls that punters had left behind.

He claimed several accolades at youth level; he qualified for the England under-23 team with whom he represented at major international events, and won both the English Under-23 National Championship and National Under-23 Grand Prix as an individual.

Since moving into full senior level events, Cooney has consistently been featuring in the latter stages of big competitions. In 2019, he reached the last four of the English National Amateur Singles and was one win away from becoming a world champion in Blackpool.

As a qualifier, ‘The Dominator’ ran a marathon gauntlet throughout the championship, winning a total of 14 matches from start to finish. At the main venue he recorded several impressive victories, eliminating the likes of Lee Kendall, Rob Wharne and then reigning European Champion Dylan Leary 10-9 in the semi-finals. Only defending champion Michael Hill denied him a fairytale ending in the final, but Cooney gave a fine account of himself during an 11-6 defeat.
