One of 8-ball pool's most successful players of recent times, Scott Gillespie was arguably the best player in the world prior to the coronavirus pandemic having won both European and World Championships, and a host of other major titles in a short space of time.
Although Gillespie frequently travelled to international events as part of the Scotland squad – with whom he has won several team accolades – it hasn’t been until the last few years that he started to become a regular at big individual competitions across the UK and beyond.
A former PPPO World Under-21 Champion and two-time Scottish Championship winner in 2012 and 2014, Gillespie claimed his maiden global major at senior level in 2013 when he defeated John Chambers in the final of the Nations Cup in Malta.
Gillespie would suffer final heartaches at the 2015 European Blackball Championship, 2016 Scottish Open and 2017 Supreme Pool Masters, but he has since made up for those losses by becoming a serial and consistent winner of big silverware in the sport.
His streak began with victory at the first Supreme Pool Series event – the 2018 Jason Owen Open – where he saw off several world-class players including fellow countryman Liam Dunster 11-9 in the final.
Memorably, in a series which assembled the best of the best, Gillespie scored a second Supreme Pool Series event title later that same year at the K8.com Classic after denying Shaun Storry 11-7 in the climax. At the season-ending Home Leisure Direct Grand Finals, the avid Rangers FC fan also made the last four where he lost to eventual winner Dunster who later raised the £51,000 first prize cheque.
